We’re seeing a major comeback of voluminous, layered cuts with movement—think ‘90s blowouts and soft, feathered shaping.
On the flip side, sleek and silky single-colored hair is trending hard for that glassy, ultra-polished look.
When it comes to color, low-maintenance is the vibe. TikTok’s “recession blondes” and “recession brunettes” are all about subtle dimension, rooty blends, and tones that grow out gracefully.
Election day is next week, Tuesday, May 20, and Salem-area voters will help decide the future of local schools, city services, and community programs. Ballots include four Salem-Keizer School Board seats, a new Salem City Council member for Ward 6, and a proposed five-year property tax levy to prevent deep cuts to Salem’s parks, library, and Center 50+. Voters will also weigh in on a Chemeketa Community College bond renewal for career education expansion and, in Polk County, a tax to upgrade the fairgrounds in Rickreall. With voter turnout historically low in local elections, your vote could make the difference. Be sure to mail or drop off your ballot by 8:00PM on Tuesday, May 20!
The Salem-Keizer School Board has approved a new three-year contract for Superintendent Andrea Castañeda, tying any raise to increases given to district teachers. Board members praised her leadership through budget cuts and union negotiations. The contract continues her $15,000 annual donation to youth-focused programs and ties future raises to cost-of-living and step increases still being negotiated with the teacher union. Director Krissy Hudson cast the sole vote against the contract, citing concerns about the district’s direction. The board also approved four curriculum adoptions for science, social science, and world languages. (Salem Reporter)
Salem Housing Snapshot – Week of May 15, 2025
Median list price: $539,950
Market Action Index: 42 – slight seller’s edge. Activity is flat versus last month, but inventory has ticked up to 476 listings.
Pricing trends: New listings are coming in a bit lower ($499,999 median), and the cost per square foot sits at $280.
Time on market: Homes are taking about 83 days on average to sell, with half moving in 35 days or less.
Price adjustments: 38% of listings have cut price, while only 3% bumped theirs up.
Rental pulse: Median rent now sits at $2,295.
Bottom line: We’re still in light seller-friendly territory, but higher inventory is giving buyers a touch more breathing room. If demand heats up, expect prices to climb again, keep an eye on that Market Action Index.

Meet Theodoros Elwood! This freshly-turned 1-year-old was rescued from 4 All MuttKind and is already keeping the family on their toes. Caught red-pawed biting his leash mid-walkies right after Grandma swore he’d never do such a thing. Nice try, Theo. 🐾🎉🦴
