Hey Salem,
Monday night's City Council meeting had the usual budget talk and fee schedules. But it also had three moments worth pausing on. Three proclamations. Three reminders that this city shows up for the things that matter.
Make Music Day is back June 21st for its 11th year. If you've never wandered downtown on the summer solstice while free live music spills out of every park, plaza, and storefront, this is your year. It started in France back in 1982 and somehow landed here in Salem in 2016. This year it carries a little extra weight. The celebration honors Mark Green, the man who brought it to town. His family stood up at the meeting and said they want to keep the music going. So let's help them do that.
Juneteenth lands June 19th, recognized alongside Black Joy Oregon. A day to remember, reflect, and celebrate the contributions Black Americans have made to this community and this country.
And Pride Month got its proclamation too, with Salem Capital Pride's parade and block party happening this Saturday. Free activities, food vendors, entertainment all day. The president of Salem Capital Pride said something at the meeting that stuck with me. It's easy to feel like you don't do much that matters. But you show up, and you realize there's more of you than you thought. That's the whole point. Showing up.
So that's the invitation this week. Make some music. Learn some history. Show up for your neighbors.
Party.

You know that closet. The one you've been meaning to clean out for two years. Here's your excuse.
Cherry City Flea is turning Salem Center Mall into the biggest garage sale this city has ever seen. Three Saturdays this summer. Hundreds of sellers. Thousands of shoppers. All indoors, all downtown, all yours.
Mark your calendar: June 27 · July 18 · August 29. Doors open 11 AM, close at 5 PM.
Want to shop? It's free. Free parking too. Just bring cash, bring a friend, and bring a wagon because the good stuff goes fast. This is exactly what malls were built for.
Want to sell? Even better. Turn your garage clutter into cash in front of a crowd that actually showed up to buy. Grab a table, set your prices, make deals. No Craigslist flakes. No strangers at your door. We handle the permits and the marketing. You just show up.
It's $75 for one Saturday or $200 for all three. And your booth gets promoted to our 10,000+ newsletter readers and 40,000+ Instagram followers. That's not cold traffic. That's buyers.
Clean out the garage. Score a deal. Run into half of Salem while you're at it. See you there.
