Over the past two months, I've been collaborating with my good friend and talented cinematographer, Damian Byington, on Barriers to Bridges, a documentary exploring Salem's housing crisis. The film delves into why this crisis is happening, what solutions are working, and the steps we can take moving forward.
Our mission is to amplify the voices of those who tirelessly support the most vulnerable members of our community. It’s been a labor of love.

What Happened Last Week in Salem?
Medical professionals are urging vaccinations as Oregon reported 1,105 whooping cough cases in 2024, the highest since 1950, with 44 outbreaks statewide. The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) highlighted a sharp rise compared to just 40 cases in 2023, with Lane, Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Marion counties reporting the most cases. Pertussis, a contagious respiratory illness, is particularly dangerous for infants and the unvaccinated, causing severe coughing fits with the signature "whoop" sound. While masks and distancing during COVID-19 initially kept cases low, vaccination rates declined, contributing to the resurgence. OHA emphasized maternal Tdap vaccinations during pregnancy, which are 78% effective in preventing infection and 91% effective in reducing hospitalizations for infants, urging renewed focus on immunizations to curb the spread. The Willamette River in Salem is expected to rise near action stage on Tuesday, potentially causing minor flooding in low-lying areas. The National Weather Service forecasts the river to approach 21 feet, which could impact Homestead Road South, Farragut Avenue S, trails in Minto-Brown Island Park, and the east and north ends of Wallace Marine Park. The city of Salem issued an early warning, noting that while flooding is not imminent at 21.5 feet, residents in low-lying areas should prepare. Additional rain later this week may cause the river to rise again, with similar levels forecasted for Sunday. (Statesman Journal)
