What’s Happening Salem is presented by
Greetings, friends!
The month has been off to an interesting start… It felt a liiittle crazy, but it’s been so amazing seeing how people have come together to support each other. Not just around Salem, but all across the country! Some faith in humanity has definitely been restored, in some ways.
Anyway, despite this all, we still have holiday celebrations to look forward to! It’s definitely more difficult this year for some folks, but the holiday spirit will persist - that’s all we can really hope and put ourselves out there to do, y’know?
Sending hugs,
Em Chan

High School Season Wrap-Up
Fall sports is coming to an end as the volleyball and cross country state championships concluded over the weekend and football is on its way out the door. Students did a tremendous job this year, so let’s do a recap of the weekend.
Volleyball
6A
Heading into the state championships, Sprague was the number 1 seed and had the opportunity to win the state title for the first time. Sprague and South Salem (2) were the two schools from the area to make it to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Sprague won against South Medford (9), 3-0, which advanced them to the semifinals against Sheldon. South Salem also won against South Eugene (7), and put them against Jesuit.
South Salem lost, so they went up against Sheldon to determine 3rd/5th place; South Salem came out on top, 3-2.
Sprague and Jesuit were back in the finals, and it was like a repeat of 2018. It was a close game, but it was not Sprague’s year. They lost 3-2, and came in second once again. It was a very exciting year for volleyball, and fingers crossed that next year will be just as epic!
Football
6A
Round 1 of the state championship was Nov. 7, with Sprague (14) against Lake Oswego (3) and West Salem (15) against Nelson (2). Both teams lost, as Sprague ended with 14 to Lake O’s 49, and West Salem at 12 to Nelson’s 35.
The Columbia Cup quarterfinals was also the same evening, with North Salem (20) against Beaverton (21). North Salem lost, 15-35, thus concluding the season for our local high school football program.
Cross Country
The OSAA State XC Championships were held at Lane Communit College on Nov. 8. These are the results for the boys and girls 5,000 meters. Like golf, the lower the score, the better it is. 6A schools were the only ones around Salem that did well at the state championships.
Boys
Jesuit placed first, with a score of 31. The West Salem team placed 15th, with a score of 387 and a total time of an hour and 24 minutes and 48 seconds (the spread was 1:39.5) The Sprague team placed 18th, with a score of 540 and a total time of an hour and 28 minutes and 36 seconds (the spread was 28.8).
The highest-placing individual student from the Salem-area high schools was West Salem senior Anders Hagen, who came in 38th place. He had a time of 16 minutes and 13.5 seconds.
Girls
The Lincoln team placed first overall, with a score of 94. West Salem’s team placed 9th, with a score of 209 and a total time of an hour and 37 minutes and 41.6 seconds (the spread was 2:38.8). North Salem placed 15th and had a score of 388, with a total time of an hour and 42 minutes and 38.9 seconds (the spread was 4:25.4).
The fastest individual student from Salem-area schools was Nelida Dalgas, a North Salem senior who placed second. She had a time of 17 minutes, 24.6 seconds. Fellow senior Avery Meier placed fourth with a time of 17 minutes and 53.4 seconds.
