Building a Legacy in Salem: How Lucy Escobar is Redefining Leadership

Lucy Escobar isn't just a consultant or a coach; she is a veteran of the local business landscape who has spent over 25 years watching Salem’s economy evolve—first from the teller line, then as a manager at Key Bank, and now as a sought-after leadership expert.
For Lucy, leadership isn't a corporate buzzword; it’s a community responsibility. Her journey from Torrance, California, to becoming a pillar of the Mid-Willamette Valley is a testament to her belief that "leadership comes with humanity."
The Banking Foundation
Before she was an executive coach, Lucy spent 20 years in the banking and finance industry. This wasn't just about spreadsheets; it was a front-row seat to the struggles and triumphs of Salem’s entrepreneurs. As a manager, she saw why some local businesses flourished while others shuttered. She realized that while financial capital is necessary, human capital is the true engine of success.
This realization led her to pivot. She sought out the best in the world, eventually becoming a certified John Maxwell Coach and an Emotional Intelligence Practitioner. She took the "old school" banking logic, where emotions were seen as a liability, and flipped it on its head. Today, she teaches Salem leaders that emotional intelligence is a high-octane energy source that drives team performance and clarity.
A Champion for the Community
Lucy’s impact on Salem goes far beyond her office in Keizer. She is a co-founder of the Latino Business Alliance and Expo Negocio, and she previously served as a Human Rights and Public Relations Commissioner for the City of Salem. Her dedication hasn't gone unnoticed; she was recognized as the Salem Chamber of Commerce’s "Outstanding Young Professional" and is a Paul Harris Fellow through the Salem-Creekside Rotary.
The Legacy of the "Why"
While her professional accolades are numerous, including being the author of Atrévete a Ser Una Mujer Exitosa, Lucy’s true motivation is personal. She identifies her son, Delfino, and her grandson as her "Why." Her goal is to leave a legacy in Salem, ensuring that every person and business she touches is left better than she found them.
In a city that thrives on local connection, Lucy Escobar is proving that collaboration always beats competition. Whether she’s mentoring a small business owner or consulting for a large organization, her message remains the same: Lead with heart, stay grounded in your values, and never forget the "humanity" in leadership.
The "Taco Analogy" for Team Building
During her interview at Habaneros, Lucy shared her signature framework for building a world-class team, cleverly translated into a language every Salem local understands: The Taco.
The Tortilla (Values): This is the foundation. Without strong values, the business cannot hold itself together.
The Meat (Accountability): The substance of the business. Lucy emphasizes the importance of 30-60-90 day benchmarks to ensure every team member has the right skill set.
The Toppings (Cohesiveness): When the team works in harmony, the "taco" looks and tastes better for the customer.
The Habanero (The Leader): That’s the "kick." The leader provides the direction and the heat that brings the whole vision to life.
