McKay Marching Band Performs at Disneyland
On Sunday, February 15th, The McKay High School Royal Scots marching band performed on Main Street, USA at Disneyland, marking a major milestone for a program that was rebuilt just five years ago. What began with fewer than 30 students in borrowed uniforms has grown into a 114-member band traveling the West Coast and earning a spot through Disney’s competitive selection process.
Students fundraised for years to make the trip happen, selling chocolates and hosting events to cover costs. For 78 students, it was their first time flying. HUGE kudos to these kids for putting in the work to make this moment possible.
The band performed “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars and “Test Drive” from How to Train Your Dragon, drawing cheers from the crowd. Watch a portion of the performance here.
Beyond the parade, students recorded music in Disney’s studios and explored the parks together. Director Scott Avzaradel said the trip was about more than music. It was about representing Salem with pride.
The band is now gearing up for competition season and The band is now gearing up for competition season and continuing fundraising efforts for future travel opportunities. Keep an eye out for upcoming fundraisers and consider showing your support. (Salem Reporter)
